Best mobile phones of 2022
Need a new mobile? The smartphone market is bursting with options to suit Apple iPhone aficionados and Android lovers.
As well as budget, there are a variety of factors to consider when choosing a device, including whether it can boast an unbeatable screen, a camera with a wide array of lenses, or just decent battery life.
And then, of course, there’s the network it uses. These days, 5G comes as standard with premium-class smartphones. We’ve carried out research to find what we think are the top five devices in 2022.
1. iPhone 14 Pro Max - 5/5 stars
Screen size: 6.7”
Screen resolution: 1290 x 2796
Max RAM: 6GB
Max storage capacity: 1TB
Battery capacity: 4,323mAh
Price: £1,199
Our verdict
Apple’s latest model incorporates two new key features. The Dynamic Island display positioned at the top of the 6.7” screen expands to show notifications as well as information such as the duration of a live call or the charge left in connected earpods.
The Always-On function keeps the lockscreen on but dimmed even when the phone is not in use, to display information such as the time, as well as widgets and a wallpaper of choice.
This device’s camera array is the most advanced yet for an iPhone. The 12MP telephoto and ultrawide lenses sit alongside a new 48MP wide lens – the highest megapixel lens an iPhone currently has to offer.
Costing £1,199, the iPhone 14 Pro Max is £350 cheaper than the iPhone 13 Pro Max at launch.
2. Galaxy S22 Ultra 5G - 5/5 stars
Screen size: 6.8”
Screen resolution:1440 x 3088
Max RAM: 12GB
Max storage capacity: 1TB
Battery capacity: 5,000mAh
Price: £1,329
Our verdict
This device costs the same as its predecessor, the Galaxy 21 Ultra 5G, did at launch.
For the £1,329 price tag, this device boasts a 6.8” display, new and improved camera software to enhance night time photography. As for the hardware, the rear lenses of the device are flatter allowing the phone to lay better on flat surfaces.
Samsung has kept the relatively extraordinary 108MP main camera sensor that featured in the previous range.Up to 1TB of storage is available on this device - larger than its predecessor’s. However, there’s only a maximum 12GB of RAM, 4GB less than that provided with the 22 Ultra 5G.
3. iPhone 14 Plus - 5/5 stars

Screen size: 6.7”
Screen resolution: 2,480 x 1,080 (both)
Max RAM: 16GB (both)
Max storage capacity: 512GB (both)
Battery capacity: 4,323mAh
Price: £949
Our verdict
The ‘Plus’ version of the iPhone 14 generation takes the typical place of a ‘mini’ version of the base model.
For £949, it offers a relatively large 6.7″ Super Retina XDR display and large 4,800mAh battery. As with the base model, there’s 4GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
4. iPhone 14 - 5/5 stars
Screen size: 6.1"
Screen resolution: ââ1170 x 2532
Max RAM: 4GB
Max storage capacity: 512GB
Battery capacity: 3,279mAh
Price: £849
Our verdict
The iPhone 14’s wider angle lens, and brighter flash sets it apart from the iPhone 13. It is also £230 cheaper than its predecessor at launch, at £849.
However, the two devices do share a number of features such as 4GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. They also are both powered by the A15 Bionic chipset.
5. Galaxy S22+ 5G - 5/5 stars
Screen size: 6.6”
Screen resolution: 1080 x 2340
Max RAM: 8GB
Max storage capacity: 256GB
Battery capacity: 5,000mAH
Price: £949
Our verdict
The Galaxy S22+ succeeds the Galaxy S21+ and offers a number of notable features.
There’s 8GB of RAM and the option of either 128GB or 256GB in storage.
Aesthetically, the Gorilla Glass Victus+ rear, gives the device a more premium feel while being durable. Note that although the bezels are slightly smaller on this phone, allowing for a larger display, the phone has less pixels per inch than the base Galaxy S22.
For £949, the camera array includes a 108MP main lens that sets it above the iPhone, in this regard.
What to look for in a smartphone
- If video calling is important, through an app such as FaceTime for example, then a smartphone featuring 5G connectivity is probably the one most suitable. 5G represents the most cutting-edge technology going. With a signal that can be stronger than it is for some home broadband connections, it means there shouldn’t be drop out from a call or from any annoying ‘lag’. The smartphones above feature 5G but, before taking the plunge, users should check that it’s available in their area. Towns and cities of the UK are currently better served than more rural areas
- As far as tasks go, streaming films and music fall under the category of ‘heavy-lifting’ when it comes to data transfer. For uninterrupted entertainment, 5G is the go-to connection of choice. So, once again, consider choosing a phone with the technology that’s already built in. For downloading movies or music first, make sure the smartphone’s storage is up to the job, especially for a big library.Ideally look for smartphones boasting a storage capacity of 512G
- When it comes to gaming, smartphones with a powerful processor (such as A16 Bionic chip that’s a feature of the Apple iPhone 14 range) can be useful. This will help deliver smooth graphics, while a high-resolution display and large screen will both contribute to the overall gaming experience
- Budding photographers need to consider multiple factors when choosing a smartphone, such as picking a handset with multiple lenses that can take high-resolution pictures. A wide zoom lens can help with impressive image-making, while an extensive f-stop function helps with depth-of-field image quality and helping to create an array of effects
- Alternatively, if making videos on a smartphone is high-priority, remember that recording in 8K produces the sharpest quality footage possible but is not currently available across all handsets
- Users should aim for one with a large RAM and a powerful processor, even if they’re not sure what the priorities from their phone are going to be. They should think of the processor as the handset’s engine, allowing them to move smoothly from one app to another, or helping to carry out several tasks simultaneously. A decent battery capacity, around 3,000mAh for example, should provide at least a day’s worth of juice for budding users.
